  • 200 yards | 23-24 microns | approx. 100 grams | chunky (bulky) weight
  • 100% Wyoming-grown Targhee-Columbia wool
  • Fleece Dyed in Philadelphia.
  • Woolen-Spun in New Hampshire.
As a result of its woolen-spun manufacturing process, Quarry is suitable for a wonderful range of gauges:
  • 3.5 stitches to 1"; Suggested Needle: 6 mm (US 10)
  • 3 stitches to 1"; Suggested Needle: 8 mm (US 11)

Quarry is a chunky brother to Shelter and Loft inspired by roving-style “unspun” yarns, offered in pillowy 100-gram skeins. Three strands of the same lofty, woolen-spun Targhee-Columbia fleece are gently spun together into a plump yarn that looks like a single ply and has greater tensile strength and stitch definition than a true unspun yarn.

Quarry loves to cable and beautifully renders all kinds of textural stitch work. We think it’s ideal for sweaters, coats, blankets, and cozy accessories.

About the Yarn  >

Quarry has a soft and rustic hand; since Brooklyn Tweed never chemically scours their yarn, you’ll find the occasional fleck of vegetable matter that remains as evidence of the sheep’s life on the Wyoming rangeland. The yarn’s one-directional twist may cause it to twirl between the needles and the ball while you’re knitting, but the fabric will be well balanced with no biasing. Quarry knits will bloom to become cohesive and supple after a wet blocking. You shouldn’t notice any change in gauge. This yarn loves to cable and beautifully renders all kinds of textural stitch work. Despite its soft structure, it can be worked at looser gauges without loss of integrity to the fabric. We think it’s ideal for sweaters, coats, blankets, and cozy accessories.

Quarry comes in fifteen heathered colors. The structure of this yarn blends the hues in a slightly striated way, reminding Brooklyn Tweed of geological formations, so they gave each color the name of a mineral or gemstone.

Please note that the color settings on your monitor may not display yarn colors accurately. Shade cards are available for purchase, directly from Brooklyn Tweed, with free shipping within the USA.

About Targhee-Columbia Wool  >

The Targhee-Columbia breed combines the softness and elasticity of finewool Targhee with the robust substance and warmth of mediumwool Columbia. This versatile mingling of wearability and durability makes Targhee-Columbia suitable for next-to-skin wear, outerwear, or heirloom pieces for the home. We source this breed for Shelter, Loft, and Quarry; the woolen construction of these yarns further enhance the fleece’s lofty and warmth-trapping characteristics.

Care  >

WET-BLOCKING

Fill a sink or basin with cold water and submerge the fabric in water, gently squeezing out any air bubbles so that the piece can remain under water without being held there. Soak work for several minutes, allowing fabric to become completely saturated. Remove excess moisture by rolling your fabric between clean, dry towels with light pressure. Lay fabric flat and shape to air dry.

We recommend alternating skeins while knitting to distribute the color evenly.
