Fingering + Sock weight yarn

Fingering + Sock yarns are thin, but definitely useable. This is a common weight for shawls and socks. (Who would have guessed?) Both Fingering and Sock yarns are essentially the same size; 14 wraps per inch (wpi) and a knit gauge of 28 stitches over 4 inches [10cm]. (7 stitches per inch)

Sock isn't really a weight of yarn, but rather a type. Sock yarn is frequently blended with nylon or silk for strength, and has three or more plies. The ply twist is also tight, and the visible ply lines on the yarn should look almost horizontal. You can knit socks out of any weight or type of yarn that you'd like; but the fiber content and the way the plies are twisted is what makes "sock yarn" good for socks.
