CMQG Quilted Coat/Vest - 2 sessions
CMQG Quilted Coat/Vest - 2 sessions
You are an experienced quilter with an interest in using an existing quilt or your quilting skills to create your very own quilted garment. Overwhelmed by all the options and not sure where to start? Seeking someone to help you map out your coat before you cut? Virginia has made a few quilted coats over the years, most recently seen on Parker Posey in The Parenting. That coat just happens to be made from a vintage whole cloth quilt using a self-drafted pattern and creatively cut to maintain the original binding as the hem.
Patterns that we've tested: Grainline's Tamarack - the hood is probably the best one out there unless you like that elf/gnome hood style, Megan Nielsen's Hovea - the angled, deep pockets are well designed. Wardrobe by Me's Ozark Vest - zips up, designed for a quilted lining, Sarah Kirsten's Juniper Quilted Jacket, and Helen's Closet Wildwood Jacket/Vest. You are welcome to introduce Virginia to a new pattern but please make sure your pattern was designed by a real person - not AI and has been tested. It's awful taking time to make something that isn't well-designed, with clear instructions.
Limited to 10 students (16 yrs of age or older); 4 students are required for class to meet. If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will receive a full refund.
- Level: intermediate/advanced. This is not a quilting class. Nor is it a first garment class. Knowledge of both art forms is essential.
- We provide: the expertise, tools, and machines.
- You bring: yourself, a copy of the pattern you want to use that you have traced (if you are grading between sizes please start with the larger measurement) - tracing the pattern is only necessary if you are working from a tissue pattern, if you have a copy shop print out you can cut directly from the paper. You will either need a quilt (or two) or fabric and batting as required by the pattern. You should work on your vest/jacket between sessions so please bring your thread and a bobbin to class. Don't forget that we offer 15% off supplies purchased for class.
- Class length: 4 1/2 hours per session - we highly encourage folks to eat before class and to bring snacks!
- NOTE: This workshop is open to members of the Cambridge Modern Quilt Guild from July 12-August 16 and then will be opened up to other Modern Quilt Guild members.
Class meets Saturday, September 13 and 27 at 1 PM. There is parking available for extended workshops through a partnership with S&S.
You may be asked to mask. Thank you for your understanding.
*Some Sewing Classes may be scheduled for our downstairs studio. Please contact us if you would prefer not to navigate stairs and we will switch studios.
