East End House is one of Greater Boston’s oldest social service centers, and has been a vital resource for newly immigrated and lower-income individuals and families. East End House officially entered its 150th year of operation in 2026! Throughout its history, the organization has continually evolved to meet emerging community needs: from pioneering well-baby clinics in the early 1900s, to leading youth workforce initiatives during the Great Depression, launching Cambridge’s first Head Start program and introducing multilingual energy audits in the 1970s.
East End House currently serves over 5,500 individuals annually. Their outcome-driven programs use evidence-based curriculum to prepare preschoolers for Kindergarten and give school age and middle school youth the skills to become successful adults.
Beyond youth programming, East End House plays a critical role in addressing basic needs and family stability. Its community food program provides consistent access to nutritious groceries, responding to rising food insecurity affecting approximately one in three Cambridge residents. The organization also distributes infant necessities, offers emergency assistance and provides therapeutic case management to help families navigate complex systems and stabilize during times of crisis. And don't forget seniors. East End House serves our senior community through meal accessibility, wellness programs, and opportunities for social connection and volunteer engagement — reducing isolation and promoting healthy aging.

Like always, please consider making a direct donation! And if you are looking for volunteer opportunities, East End House has many roles that need to be filled. Either directly or through Boston Cares.
*Since launching the We Care Wednesday initiative in January 2017 we have donated over $110K to a variety of nonprofits and mutual aid funds doing essential work in our community as well as other places. From the very local programs like Material Aid and Advocacy Program and EMA Fund to national programs like Habitat for Humanity. We select organizations that we feel represent not only our commitment to a better, more equitable world but also our desire to "do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.
