Samples Worth Writing About: Kalle Dress

We learned over the past year that our community can extend beyond our four walls so with that in mind we'll be blogging about some of our creative endeavors. Including the samples we stitch for the shop. We like to create a "collection" of patterns in a variety of sizes and recommended fabrics so people can see how something stitches up. For the third quarter of 2021 we have made a collection of Closet Core Patterns and we'll kick off our samples with the Kalle, Version C.

We made a Size 8 without alterations and it is on one of our professional dress forms with the following measurements: Bust = 35", Waist = 27.5", and Hips = 35". We used Merchant and Mills Tencel twill. Tencel twill has amazing drape while also having great body which makes it great for collars and button bands. With the texture of a sandwashed silk, this fabric is Oeko-Tex certified created from recycled wood pulp harvested from sustainably managed tree farms.

The collar and button band are interfaced with whisper-weft, a great lightweight interfacing for fabric that you want to remain supple. The collar maintains its structure but isn't stiff. Buttons are four hole resin that happened to match perfectly. These are imported from France and unfortunately not available online but if you are interested in 11mm resin shirt buttons to match your tencel fabric, put a note in the order comments! Top stitched with precision using Cotton + Steel mercerized cotton thread and a Bernina edge stitching foot.

A swishy, comfortable, and work/play appropriate shirt dress you'll not only enjoy making but wearing. The instructions are thorough, option to make as a shirt or a pop-over means you can have multiple variations in your wardrobe, and there is lots of inspiration available on Instagram.
