October 2022 - We Care Wednesday

A few weeks ago, City of Cambridge Vice-Mayor Alanna Mallon reached out to see if we could gather donations for Green Street Homeless Shelter's upcoming quilting workshop. We reached out to the president of the Cambridge Modern Quilt Guild and gather here instructor, Stephanie Cave, right away to coordinate collecting tools, notions, and pretty much anything you would need to make a quilt in community. The opportunity to provide resources for this creative activity at the shelter is exactly what being in community with other makers is all about. But we also know that this is just a very small part of what Green Street Homeless Shelter does for the City of Cambridge.

This October we will be using our We Care Wednesday initiative for Solutions At Work, the organization that manages a homeless shelter for men and women on Green Street in Cambridge. Solutions also runs an evening meals program for unhoused individuals 5 days a week in Central Square. Solution At Work is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing individuals and families with resources and opportunities to strengthen their self-confidence, achieve self-sufficiency, and participate in helping others. UPDATE: Thanks to your generosity we donated $875!

We encourage you to donate directly: http://solutionsatwork.org/donate/donate-money/

Or volunteer! The shelter is currently looking for people who would like to create activities such as crafts projects with residents. Also volunteers who are willing to do maintenance or other general support. http://solutionsatwork.org/volunteer/volunteer-opportunities/

*Since launching the We Care Wednesday initiative in January 2017 we have donated over $57,905 to a variety of nonprofits and mutual aid funds doing essential work in our community as well as other places. From the Mayor's Disaster Fund to BAGLY to Movement Voter Project and Found In Translation. We select organizations that we feel represent not only our commitment to a better, more equitable world but also our desire to "do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can."
