Tana Lawn - Nana
This design takes the idea of a grid as its format, honouring artist Nana Shiomi’s practice of creating pictorial series within a set of square dimensions. Symbolic motifs such as bonsai trees, waves and a dog are captured interacting between the different squares, adding a sense of playfulness that brings the print to life. Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock is used to create the artwork’s distinctive appearance.

“I am always interested in the interplay of East and West and I am also interested in theatre – there is something quite theatrical about Nana Shiomi’s designs. The carp fighting the violent waves, but especially the little squares with various creatures treading the boards.” – Anna Buruma, Head Archivist
