American Targhee-Columbia wool shines in Shelter, Brooklyn Tweed's versatile 2-ply worsted-weight yarn. Shelter is woolen-spun, meaning the fibers remain in a lofty jumble that traps air and offers remarkable warmth and lightness. Once knit, Shelter achieves its full beauty after a wet blocking, as each stitch relaxes and bonds with its neighbors to produce a plush fabric with a halo. You shouldn’t notice any change in gauge. Ideal for knitting sweaters of every variety, winter accessories, and blankets. Like its fingering-weight sibling Loft, Shelter is fleeced-dyed and blended in 45 heathered colors.

About the Yarn >

Shelter is woolen spun, meaning the fibers remain in a lofty jumble that traps air and offers remarkable warmth and lightness. Its two plies are gently twisted to preserve that buoyant quality, so Shelter is a little more delicate than most commercial yarns. Woolen-spun yarns are also more adaptable in gauge, as they can compress to a dense sport weight or bloom to cohere as a gauzy fabric when worked on large needles.

Shelter has a dry, soft hand and a faintly rustic nature; woolen spinning sometimes results in slightly thinner or thicker sections, and you’ll find the occasional fleck of vegetable matter that proves our wool is never treated with harsh chemicals. Shelter is designed to be a workhorse yarn that invites cables, ribbing, textured stitch motifs, open work, plain stockinette and garter stitch.

Exclusive to the Shelter yarn line are three marled colorways: Newsprint, the combination of Fossil and Cast Iron Narwhal, the combination of Sweatshirt and Fossil; and Caribou, the combination of Barn Owl and Fossil.

Please note that the color settings on your monitor may not display yarn colors accurately. Shade cards are available for purchase, directly from Brooklyn Tweed, with free shipping within the USA.

About Targhee-Columbia Wool >

The Targhee-Columbia breed combines the softness and elasticity of fine wool Targhee with the robust substance and warmth of medium wool Columbia. This versatile mingling of wearability and durability makes Targhee-Columbia suitable for next-to-skin wear, outerwear, or heirloom pieces for the home. We source this breed for Shelter, Loft, and Quarry; the woolen construction of these yarns further enhance the fleece’s lofty and warmth-trapping characteristics.

Wet Blocking  >

Fill a sink or basin with cold water and submerge the fabric in water, gently squeezing out any air bubbles so that the piece can remain underwater without being held there. Soak work for several minutes, allowing fabric to become completely saturated. Remove excess moisture by rolling your fabric between clean, dry towels with light pressure. Lay fabric flat and shape to air dry.

We recommend alternating skeins while knitting to distribute the color evenly.
