Pre-Knitting nålbinding

gather here Classes

nålbinding (a pre-knitting technique)

Guest artist, Lisa Willey, will be teaching an ancient fiber creation technique predating crocheting and  knitting. The earliest example of nalbinding item was found in a cave in Israel in 6500 BCE and in Denmark in 4200 BCE. The Vikings used the technique in Scandinavia from 793-1066 CE. It employs single ply wool yarn and an oversized dull needle with a large eye. This needle traditionally was made out of wood, bone, or antler. You’ll learn basic nalbinding technique and get started on the classic Viking “milk strainer” hat.

Lisa is a medieval re-enactor and have been nålbinding hats, mittens, and socks for 10 years.  She demonstrated nålbinding at Fiber College in Searsport, Maine in September 2019 and will be teaching at Fiber College in September 2020.
