Meet Sam - inventory assistant

As gather here has become a destination fabric and fibers store we have needed to expand our inventory so we can meet the needs of all the awesome folx looking for that perfect tool or material to make something with. Kendra, after years of working solo, now has an assistant and she'll be the first to admit that "operation gh inventory" is a lot less overwhelming.

When did you start making things?

My mom used to make my sister and me Halloween costumes when we were little, and in middle school I joined the drama club and worked with the home economics teacher to make costumes for the shows. Sometimes my mom and I would make stuff together, but it was (and still is) a way for us to connect, even when we're apart. I kept making costumes through high school, and repurposing clothes and making alterations to fit new people each year. Now I hem pants for my short friends.

What's your favorite thing to make?

My favorite thing about costumes, and about making things in general, is bringing something from my imagination into the physical world. It feels empowering to make something to fit your exact need, exactly the way you imagined. I like mending stuff, but it’s also fun to work from a pattern and get a better idea of how things fit together. I made myself a bag to hold 11x17 paper- something simple, but I use it all the time!

What have you enjoyed the most since joining the gather here team?
I’m so impressed by the creativity and skill of the people that work and visit here. The people that gather here, if you will... That creative energy fills the store and is really inspiring. Plus, it turns out I love unpacking boxes, so every day is fun.

What's your favorite tool?
A pencil, for its versatility.

What do you do when you aren't making things?
If you expand your definition enough, I’m always making something... But when I'm not crafting, I'm usually drawing, and when I'm not doing that, I try to go outside to mix things up a little.
