Rocío joined gather here in February 2020. She had only just completed training when we made the decision to temporarily shutdown. In the summer of 2020, Rocío returned to her part-time position which was quite a bit different from that first month of working at gather here. She is a talented Mexican embroidery artisan now residing in Camberville. When did you start making things?
As long as I can remember, I enjoyed making things. I started sewing garments and crocheting hats for my dolls. I devoted some of my early time practicing oil painting but now I am back to textiles. What's your favorite thing to make?
I really love embroidery; creating abstract designs, stitching together inspiring mixtures of color, texture and shapes are some of my favorite themes. Embroidery is my “room of one’s own”, my space of freedom, my rebellion and my journey to the stars.
What were you looking forward to the most about joining gather here?
Meeting people who are passionate about fibers, being surrounded with such great materials. What's your favorite tool?
Definitely my slate embroidery frame.
What do you do when you aren't making things?
I love spending time interacting and playing with my son. I enjoy observing the way he's grown up and watching him discover the complexity of life. My second passion is reading philosophy and fiction books. I also love to travel, to meditate, and to grow plants. What has been a source of joy during the pandemic?
Embroidering, cooking, and helping people while working at gather here to get the supplies they needed. I believe every single order I pack becomes a special present for someone at this difficult time and it makes me feel happy to be helpful.
