You may recognize Kit from Albertine Press where she also works part-time. Kit does signs and lettering for them and if you've been in since April classes launched you'll see that she did an awesome job on the chalkboard class calendar over the front counter. We're really excited to have someone who dabbles in lots of crafts join the team and who also has really great handwriting. We hope you enjoy getting to know Kit!
When did you start making things?
I feel like I've always been making things! I've always been an artistic person, and from a young age I would do crafts and make things with my mom, helping her out with scrapbooking and Halloween costume-making. My parents even made one wall of my childhood bedroom a giant chalkboard so I had a safe place to draw on the walls.
What's your favorite thing to make?
Currently my favorite things to work on are block prints- I've been doing linocuts recently, and carving your own stamp is really satisfying! I'll be printing some tote bags soon, so I'm excited to see how they turn out. I'm also a big fan of embroidery because it's a relatively simple thing to pick up, but there's a lot you can do with it, and it's a great way to personalize clothes!
What are you looking forward to the most about being a part of the gather here community?
I'm really looking forward to gaining more confidence and inspiration to tackle bigger projects! A lot of my fiber art projects until now have been relatively small and simple, and I'm really excited to grow and experiment with new techniques. I can't wait to make my own backpack!
What's your favorite tool?
I love a good rotary cutter. Besides that, you can do a lot with just a self-healing mat and a ruler.
What do you do when you aren't making things?
I got a Kindle this year for Christmas (after being cautious about ebooks for a long time) and it's really changed my life. I take ebooks out from the library constantly, so I'm always reading at least three books at a time. 😅 I also love to cook, so I look forward to playing around with new recipes and ingredients. When I'm not doing either of those things, I'm (predictably) probably watching Netflix.
